Please refer to your Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server product documentation for information on configuring your database server hardware.

For details on setting up the database server, see Prepare the database for SmartPlant Foundation.

Hardware Recommendations

These hardware recommendations are based on a 64-bit platform and should be used for comparison with other hardware platforms.

  • 10 core high-end server processor (to host data for one SmartPlant Foundation primary site; add 4 cores per additional site)

  • 64 GB RAM (to host data for one SmartPlant Foundation primary site; add 32 GB per additional site if sharing the same database instance; for each site in a separate instance, add 64 GB)

  • Fast data storage (for example, 1 TB with I/O throughput better than 3 GBps with 2 or more data channels)

  • Data Backup/Recovery

  • 1000 BaseT or higher network interface connection to the Application Server

    • These database server hardware recommendations are based on the assumption that this server is hosting the database to support one (1) typical SmartPlant Foundation primary site and will host no other major Intergraph or third-party software. Hardware sizing, especially for servers, depends on many factors such as the number of concurrent users per site, the size of the project (which translates into the size of the database), and other software that is running on the machine. Here are some guidelines for sizing a system:

      • For each additional site that is added to this implementation, if the sites are to share the same database instance, the database server configuration should be increased by 4 cores and 32 GB of memory. If an additional site is added within its own instance, add 4 cores and 64 GB of memory.

      • The actual memory requirement for each site is dependent on concurrency and system usage.

      • Performance capacity planning should be undertaken for an accurate measurement.

    • Multiple physical drives should be used on the database server to distribute file read/write operations and improve performance. For example, the operating system should be installed on its own drive, with separate drives containing the core database files and user data files.

Supported Database Servers

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2022 (64-bit) (supported on Update 43 and later) or Microsoft SQL Server 2019 (64-bit) (supported on Update 14 and later)

For SQL Server database servers, Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition may be used as the database server platform. Large scale implementations may exceed Standard Edition limitations on maximum number of cores and maximum memory utilized per instance. Certain Enterprise Edition performance features may improve overall performance in some cases. These considerations should be reviewed as part of your stress testing and capacity planning. Check the Microsoft recommendations to determine the edition that meets your needs.

  • Oracle Enterprise Edition 19c (64-bit) (supported on Update 14 and later)

For Oracle database servers, Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition may be used as the database server platform. Large scale implementations may benefit from the diagnostic and tuning packs that can be purchased only with the Enterprise Edition. Certain Enterprise Edition performance features may improve overall performance in some cases. These considerations should be reviewed as part of your stress testing and capacity planning. Check the Oracle recommendations to determine the edition that meets your needs.

    • For more information about SmartPlant authoring tools and the databases they support, see the Hexagon Compatibility Matrix - Product Report on Smart Community.Compatibility Matrix Log on with your support user name and password, click Downloads at the top of the page, and then click the Product Compatibility link on the right side of the page. Select a product from the Select the Product Name list, and then choose the version of the product from the Version list.

    • For information about supported databases for each authoring tool, see the matrix for the appropriate authoring tool.

    • SmartPlant Foundation does not support Global Workshare Configuration for database replication.
